Here are a few suggestions of how to enjoy music as a family experience. There are so many fun ways to incorporate music into everyday life and special occasions. I think I could write a full article on this topic and incorporate the spiritual uses of music in family life as well. I realize that not all families share interests in music and it can even be a topic of contention. However, think about the positive ways that you have experienced music as a family and also new things you could try.
1. Boogie down in your living room – Find some music that your kids like and have a dance party in your living room. Be silly and goofy and dance like no one is watching. Make clean up or doing chores fun by playing some upbeat music. Play Guitar Hero or Rock Band with your kids. They will most likely be very amused and enjoy your effort.
2. Sign your toddlers (or teens) up for music lessons – They’re ready sooner than you think. If they are fascinated by guitars, drums or other instruments and can focus on a task for 10-15 minutes, it might be the right time. Most teens love music and they may be able to find a positive and creative outlet in learning an instrument.
3. Chill to a playlist on a lazy summer day – Life is too busy not to slow down and relax when you get a chance. Create a relaxing summer playlist that you can put on while spending time on the deck and just enjoy. Practice doing nothing together. Music is great as a background to other activities, but it is also wonderful to just enjoy listening and interact with your family about the music.
