Finding A Good Therapist For Your Child

Adapted from an article from associatedcontent.com

Where to Begin:
Are you considering finding a therapist for your child? Not sure if your child actually needs a therapist? Not sure where to begin finding a therapist for your child? Some indications that it is time to find a child therapist are listed here. I will also discuss points to consider in finding a child therapist, along with websites that may help you in your search.

Circumstances
Certain circumstances may necessitate finding a therapist for your child. A continual pattern of depression, anxiety or other psychological or emotional problems may be a sign that they need help. Some events may be cause for finding a therapist for your child. Events such as a divorce, moving, a death in the family or other stressful situations may be an especially difficult adjustment for your child.

Indications
Not all children who experience stressful events need a therapist. You might consider finding a therapist if your child is showing signs of distress. These signs could include things like a sudden falling behind in schoolwork, losing sleep, mood swings or depression. Your child may benefit from counseling if they are showing behavioral problems, anxiety, outward displays of anger or other emotional challenges.

Specialties
Many therapists specialize in working with certain issues. Finding the right therapist for your child may involve searching for a therapist that specializes in handling similar cases. For instance if your child is having suicidal thoughts, you will need a therapist who specializes in the treatment of depression. The more experience the therapist has in dealing with a certain issue, the better the chance that your child will benefit from the therapy.

Compatibility
Personality is an important consideration when finding a therapist for your child. If your child can make a positive emotional connection with their therapist it will increase the likelihood that they will be able to take advantage of the therapeutic relationship. If your child dislikes his therapist, it’s likely there will be no benefit in seeing them. Your child may have to meet several therapists before finding one with whom they are compatible.

Resources
There are resources available to help in finding a therapist for your child. Talk to someone at your child’s school for recommendations. Your child’s pediatrician may have suggestions of therapists that they can recommend. You can also utilize online resources to find a suitable therapist. There are several websites offering nationwide directories and referrals to therapists based on your needs and location, such as Psychologytoday.com and Find-a-therapist.com.
