Here is a sampling of some of my favorite parenting quotes that I recently discovered. I love proverbs of all sorts. Succinct wisdom is sometimes very profound. I have also been reading the book, “Hold on to Your Kids” by Gordon Neufeld, which is a parenting approach based on attachment theory. The book talks about the trend of children being increasingly influenced by peer culture instead of parental connections and how to reverse this “norm” that can be quite detrimental.
“Parents who are afraid to put their foot down usually have children who tread on their toes.” – Chinese Proverb
“A father’s goodness is higher than the mountain, a mother’s goodness deeper than the sea.” – Japanese Proverb
“No one knows how children will turn out; a great tree often springs from a tender plant.” – Norwegian proverb
“The problem with being a parent is that by the time you are experienced, you are usually unemployed.” – Author Unknown
“The best inheritance a parent can give his children is a few minutes of his time each day.” – O. A. Battista
“The secret of parenting is not in what a parent does, but in who a parent is to their child.” – Gordon Neufeld in Hold On To Your Kids
“Parenting that takes its cues from the child’s preferences can get you retired long before the job is done.” – Gordon Neufeld
“The child supplies the power but the parents have to do the steering.” – Benjamin Spock
