Why you should stop reading parenting books . . .

I wanted to share a quick thought with you. If you are overwhelmed and trying to figure out how to parent your child, maybe you should stop reading parenting books. This might seem like a strange suggestion, but think about it.

If you go to the bookstore or shop online you will find hundreds of parenting books with thousands of ideas, strategies and parenting approaches. You can find a lot of good information in these books, but you may end up confused and wondering why the “best” strategies don’t work with your kids.

My thought for you is simply to trust your instincts as a parent and focus on your emotional connection with your child. You know your child better than anyone. You know when your efforts to teach, discipline and love your child are working or falling flat. I truly believe that our emotionally connected, responsive and loving relationship with our children is the most powerful thing that we can develop and nurture. Much better than the best advice from any parenting expert or therapist.

Make sure you are communicating unconditional love and valuing the relationship over obedience or outcomes. Use humor, physical touch and verbal affirmation to strengthen the emotional connection. Trust your instincts and love your kids with all your heart.

Those are my thoughts. What would you add?
