Who Are Your Clients?

Counseling Services in Santa RosaI think that this is an important question, both for me and for my current and future clients. I don’t believe that any one therapist can be truly excellent at working with every issue or every type of client. While there are general practitioners, most therapists have one or more specialties or populations that they work particularly well with.

Many times, it makes sense for people to seek out a “specialist” to really address their specific issues, whether they are physical, emotional or spiritual. This blog post is my attempt to share with you exactly who I work with and what issues I feel especially skilled to work with. So, here goes. I will interview myself. :)

Who do you work with?

I primarily work with boys, ages 8 to 18. It is my personal history, education and training that have brought me to the place where I love to work with young people. I have worked with boys in residential treatment for the last six years. I have also worked in counseling agencies, elementary schools and in private practice over the last ten years. I find tremendous joy in connecting with young people, meeting them where they are and helping them to cope with the challenges they face.

What issues do you work with?

In counseling I help boys who are having difficulties with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, anger or substance abuse. The source of their issues may be family relationships, parents divorcing, problems at school or any number of other things. Some of the boys I work with have ADD/ADHD, Clinical Depression, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Autism or PTSD. Other boys are just having trouble figuring out their emotions, discovering their identity or trying to cope with the various stresses of being a young person.

How do you work?

I utilize a combination of individual therapy, family therapy and group therapy. My approach depends on the needs of the individual or family. I also provide parent coaching, which helps parents to address emotional or behavioral problems with their children. I use elements of attachment theory, family systems theory and cognitive behavioral therapy to help my clients reach their personal goals. I can also provide Christian Counseling for people who are looking for therapy that is congruent with their spiritual values.

What about young children, girls or adults?

While my specialty is working with boys, I do enjoy working with other people as well. I can do play, art and sand tray therapy in my office with younger children. I very much appreciate opportunities to work with adults and girls as well. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, my training has equipped me to work with relationship difficulties on many levels.

I provide all of these counseling services in my private practice office, which is conveniently located in the Waterfall Towers Business Park in Santa Rosa. Please give me a call at (707) 520-4357 or send me an email at uriah@helpthiskid.com if you have any questions about how counseling might benefit you or your child.
