Social Media and Your Teenager – January Teleseminar

In 2012 I am going to be even more committed to offering useful information to help you in parenting your teenager.

One way that I am going to do this is by offering free teleseminars on hot topics. You can easily join in on the phone or listen to the recordings at your convenience.

I also have a few free things to offer you for signing up.

My first one hour teleseminar on “Social Media and Your Teenager” will address many issues that you may be concerned about, such as . . .

Setting limits on social media time
    Cyber bullying & harassment
    Health problems
    Teen depression
    Identity theft
    Privacy concerns
    Over sharing of personal information
    Inappropriate sexual posts
    Sexting
    Negative social relationships
Mistakes that might affect his future

I will also include practical tips on how to protect your teen online and teach him how to be safe and smart. I don’t have to tell you that this is an increasingly important area for you to be informed about in order to support your teenager.

That is why I want to answer your questions.

    Uriah–

What an awesome and much-needed and specialized niche you have here. I’ve spent countless hours working with middle-school aged kids (mostly boys referred for behavioral issues) and I want to thank you for tackling this high-risk group. Many may disagree, but I feel that males are especially effective when counseling males, especially teens.

Oversharing of personal info is something I have seen some of my young counseling clients do in an effort to fit in, navigate the social media waters which can be so cruel, so isolating and frankly, depressing for the less-than-socially-adept. Boundaries surrounding personal info and sharing is crucial in today’s online world.

Good luck with this seminar, and I look forward to hearing about how 2012 progresses for this population.

Thanks for your comment Linda! Sounds like we have done some similar work. :)

The personal connection with a therapist is most important, but it is true that sometimes it helps for boys to have a male therapist.

I agree with what you have to say about teens and social media. Such a challenge for kids and also for their parents. I am looking forward to the teleseminar and I want to answer the practical questions that parents have.

      Thanks for the support!

As the parent of a teenage girl, I can say social media has made it a different world from when I was a teen. Helping her learn what to share was a major area of concern. Best wishes with the seminar. I look forward to hearing more about your work.

Hi JoAnn. I totally agree with you that things have seriously changed. I was thinking the other day about how I used to communicate with my girlfriend (now wife) when we were teenagers. We actually wrote notes in a text program, saved them to a floppy disk and passed it back and forth. I’m sure I will be telling my kids that “back in my day” story. :) Thanks for your kind words!

Hi Uriah – To echo Linda, such an interesting and much needed counseling focus you have! I do love to counsel teens, but not as much as I love to work with emerging families, younger children and couples.  This is an area where I think male counselors are a great fit with boys, as Linda also mentioned.   good luck!

    Uriah,

I can’t wait to share this resource.  Since I don’t see a lot of adolescents in my specialty, I am always thrilled to be able to make solid resource referrals to parents.  This seminar sounds timely and valuable!

Ann, I’m so happy that you are going to share the teleseminar info! It always feels good to me to be able to share good resources that are outside my specialty. I know what you mean. :)
