Hi Rachael, I share your concern and frustration about Wiz Khalifa and other celebrities/artists promoting irresponsible choices for young people. I am so sorry to hear about your son. What a tough road. It is such a difficult call between freedom of speech and harmful messages/influences. Honestly, when I started learning about Wiz Khalifa I was shocked that he could get away with glorifying drug use to such a profound level. I pray your son stays on the road to recovery!

Hey Kathy. Glad you liked the post. Using pictures and other visuals is helpful. I also have a card game called "Dealing with Feelings" that I pull out sometimes. I like to hear that you love working with teenage boys, that is such an important part of connecting with young people, just enjoying them. :)

Hi JoAnn. Visual aids definitely help me. It is probably helpful to consider clients learning styles when teaching important concepts. Hands on and visual is usually good for kids/teens.

You make a good point Jeanie. It is hard for kids to regulate their own emotions when their parents are not healthy role models, even more so when there is drug abuse and maltreatment. It is cool to hear about you allowing your husband to experience all of his emotions. What a gift! :)

I love the story you shared Linda. It is wonderful to see boys who get empathy. I am glad that you and I are on the same page with helping young people learn these important skills.

You know, children with abusive & drugging parents often grow up seeing that things are either fine/ok or explosively angry. THen they model this for years afterwards. One of the good thingsI did for my ex was be ok with him crying about different things. It's surprising how many women are not ok with men showing emotions other than "ok" or angry, further perpetuating the myth.

One of the most important topics to address and recognize with our young boys and teens. I was reminded of this past Saturday at my son's baseball game. The opposing team's pitcher was on fire--a small, 11 y/o firecracker with wicked speed. Near the end of the game, he hit a kid on the shoulder while pitching. The little batter slumped to the ground and started to cry. The pitcher immediately ran over to comfort him and apologize. You could see in his face and hear in his voice how upset he was...Shortly thereafter, he started to throw some wild pitches--hard to tell if it was fatigue, or b/c he felt so bad.

I was more impressed with his emotional intelligence than his sports acumen, and thought what a great role model. It doesn't matter how athletic, intelligent, attractive, tall, or whatever if you aren't raised to consider others' feelings and your impact on those people you come in contact with.

Thanks for this wonderful message--proud to pass it along, Uriah!

P.S. I'm going to order this game for work :).

Nice post. However, I think many people have difficulty identifying emotions and the multiple layers of emotions they feel. Visual aids can be a great start to unlock that part of us.
